FlashForward Series Premiere: What Did Everyone See?

It's the question that will dominate FlashForward for the next few months: What did you see?

As various characters interact, and as Mark Benford tries to determine what the heck is going on, expect this inquiry (and its related, key answers) to be asked often.

Hard Day at the Office

With that in mind, here's a review of what each main character featured on this week's premiere saw in their vision of the future:

  • Mark Benford: In his office, trying to figure out the cause of the flash forwards; drinking heavily; in danger when armed men are seen outside.
  • Demetri Noh: Darkness. Will he be dead in six months?
  • Olivia Benford: With another man that she doesn't recognize (but viewers will later meet); admits to Mark that she had strong feelings for this man in her vision.
  • Bryce Varley: Simply saw himself alive; was on the verge of killing himself when blackouts occurred.
  • Aaron Stark: Saw his supposedly late daughter, thought to have been killed in Afghanistan, alive and well.
  • Stan Wedeck: Sitting on the toilet, reading the sports section; was reading story about Kobe Bryant's knee injury.
  • Janis Hawk: Getting a sonogram in her vision; not dating anyone in the present day.

What did you think of the opening episode?

Sonya Walger: FlashForward Different from Lost

FlashForward is receiving more publicity than any new show in memory.

A major reason why is the comparisons to Lost. But Sonya Walger, an actress that has first hand experience on both dramas, doesn't really see it that way.

In a new interview, she explained the differences between the shows:

"I think they're only valid in that they're both big ensemble shows with one big concept or premise. But after that, they part ways really quite rapidly. FlashForward is definitely not a sci-fi show. It doesn't have the mythology of Lost. We have one major event that happens that you are asked to buy into. After that, you're dealing with very human ripple effects - how people deal with it and how they come to terms with it.

There are six-and-a-half billion people that have blacked out, so that's potentially six-and-a-half billion stories to tell! Believe me, we're not telling all of them. But we're about to start [filming] episode eight and I'm so surprised by how far the ripple has been felt."

FlashForward Premiere Clip: Mark and Aaron

With less than a week to go until FlashForward premieres on ABC, potential viewers should check out the clip below.

In it, Mark opens up to Aaron (his AA sponsor) about what his vision held. A recovering alcohol, with a wife that has threatned to leave him if he ever drinks again, Mark is worried about what he saw during his blackout.

Aaron tries to comfort his friend, but these two have dueling hopes: Aaron actually prays for his vision to come true, as it depicts his supposedly late daughter... alive.

FlashForward Meets Lost!

We already know that FlashForward has two key connections to Lost:

  1. Sonya Walger
  2. Dominic Monaghan

Both these actors play pivotal roles on the new ABC series.

But the following photo - which doesn't reveal any actual FlashForward spoilers - makes it seem like a bit of cross promotion might also be in store.

In the background of the FlashForward photo, there's an ad for Oceanic Airlines. That's the airline on which the Lost castawards were flying prior to their crash. What does this mean for both shows? Probably nothing.

But it's a cool little easter egg...

Goodbye, Penny.

So long, Charlie.

Both Sonya Walger and Dominic Monaghan have left their Lost characters behind and are focused on the next, big ABC drama. The actors play key roles on FlashForward, which premieres on September 24.

They each posed for promotional photos this week in anticipation of the series debut. Click on each pic below for a larger version:

Gabrielle Union "Really Happy" with Role on FlashForward

As previously reported, Gabrielle Union will play a recurring character on FlashForward. She has joined the show as Zoey, Demtri Noh's fiancee.

In a recent interview, the actress remained mum on any FlashForward spoilers, but she did explain how this role came her way. Take it from here, Gabrielle!

"I had taken a meeting with ABC and we wanted our relationship to continue. I really enjoy them, as a company, and they've been freakishly supportive of me, so they were just looking for a right fit.

As Zoey

"And then, by chance, the next day, the Goyers called them and were like, "Do you think she'd ever be interested in returning to television?" They were like, "How crazy is that? We just met with her about that very thing.

"And so, the next day, I met with them. They were like, "We can't tell you a lot, but we love you and we will write for you, and we want you to be a part of this," and I was like, "Yeah!" It was kind of like Match.com. You just don't really know what you're gonna get, but you want to leap at the chance because the possibility is awesome and exciting.

So, that's all I had to go on, along with meeting them. I liked them, and that's pretty much been what's guided my decisions, the last few years, certainly with television. I wanted to work with Frank Spotnitz (for Night Stalker), Daniel Sackheim (for Life) and now the Goyers. I'm really happy.

FlashForward Casting Notice: Gary

As we inch closer to the FlashForward series premiere on September 24, ABC isn't revealing much about this new series.

Like Lost, the network is choosing to maintain a cloak of mystery about the upcoming drama.

But we can report that a casting notice has gone out for the role of "Gary," a character that will debut on the first season's eighth episode. Here's how ABC describes him:

40s, Caucasian. Hard, aggressive. A middle-management guy, he's committed to doing whatever the higher-ups need, even if it takes him into morally questionable territory. Please note in current script this is a Non-Speaking role, but with the strong possibility of returning in future episodes.

A non-speaking, prominent role? Sounds like Gary will serve as some sort of bodyguard or security person.
